Electric fence line buying guide

Jan. 10, 2022

Types of Fence Wire

Fence line supported by tension is stretched between reinforcing posts located at the ends, corners, and at intervals between long sections to form an enclosure or fencing structure. You will use smaller posts in between to ensure the fence line remains spaced and upright.

You can use several types of fence lines, depending on the use of the fence and the animals being controlled. For permanent perimeter fences, you can use steel or aluminum wire for the fence line.

If desired, you can use a fence charger to energize the fence wire. The fence wire conducts the electrical charge from the fence charger around the length of the fence.

There are many types of wire available. Your choice and the number and spacing of wires will depend on the type of fence, the type of animals you are including, and how long the fence will remain in place.

Note: When purchasing wire for your electric fence system, remember that the lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire. Most electric fences use 14 or 17 gauge wire, depending on the length of the fence and the animals contained or excluded.

Electric Fence Wire Buying Guide

Types of fence wire

Braided Wire

Braided wire is identified by the "knots" of wire that wrap around each intersecting wire, giving it a "braided" appearance. Braided wire is more expensive to purchase and install than basic wire, but safer and less expensive than wood, pipe or other fencing materials. When combined with one or more strands of barbed wire and/or wire at the top, and possibly another at the bottom, woven wire is an effective means of housing pigs, sheep or goats.

Features and Benefits

Safely houses multiple livestock species

Cheaper than wood or pipe fencing

Ideal use

Permanent fencing

Perimeter fencing

Note: Woven wire with large openings (aka sheep fencing) can be potentially dangerous to wildlife and horses. In this case, a woven wire called "field fence" should be used with a smaller, narrower opening at the bottom and a wider opening at the top.

Steel Wire

Galvanized steel wire will last the life of the fence and is the most commonly used wire.

Features and Benefits

1. Steel wire is a basic, economical wire

2. With extensions for long distance charging

3. Can be used with any type of charger

Ideal use

Semi-permanent fencing

Permanent fencing

Perimeter fencing

Note: The wire can be used with any type of charger and when properly connected to a similar extension cord, this wire can carry a charge for a long distance.
